Tips For Beginner Forklift Truck Driving

By Christine OKelly

Whether you are going to start on a
new large forklift or are beginning with smaller used forklifts, these dangerous machines shouldn't be taken lightly. It isn't necessarily hard, but it definitely takes some practice to get the hang of moving these machines around.

Moving Loads With The Forklift

When you first start
operating the machine, it is always a good idea to move empty pallets or other items that don't move or fall off as easily. This will give you a chance to get familiar with how the new or used forklifts work without being overly concerned about making a mistake or dumping a load.

You also want to keep your speed slow and steady to avoid injury and prevent from jerking the load. Sharp turns and traveling over uneven ground too quickly can also cause the load to fall. When you are completely comfortable with the controls, start moving small loads (preferably that don't break or shatter if they fall) and move onto larger and heavier items as you get experience.

Maneuvering New Or Used Forklifts

If you have never
driven a forklift before, you should undergo safety training and always have an experienced driver with you. You want to learn what the different levers, pedals, and buttons do before starting the machine and then start to move it around in an open area. You will find that all of them, regardless of their model, brand, or year, will be rear wheel drive, but they will all move a little differently and have different gauges.

Safety and security is a large part of the job. In addition to operational safety, you also need to learn how to load a pallet, how to work with loads that are uneven or oversized, and how to check for unstable loads.Whether you work in Minneapolis or Chicago, forklift driving is a valuable skill that crosses into a variety of industries, leaving the door wide open for future jobs, even within the same company. However, this skill is a never-ending learning process
