New or Used Fork Lifts

Mistakes to Avoid With New Or Used Fork lifts

By Christine OKelly

New and used fork lifts look simple enough to use, but they need to be driven as carefully as possible at all times to prevent disaster. It isn't just new fork lift drivers that make this mistake either. Even the most experienced drivers can get distracted or simply forget these rules, ending with terrible consequences. Here are some of the most common mistakes made while using these machines.

Failing To Check Behind Or Above The
Fork Lifts

This might be one of the most basic rules of operating new and used fork lifts, but it is one of the easiest to forget, particularly when things get busy. Regardless of the style you use, it can easily hide something from your view until it's too late. Relying on alarms and light doesn't necessarily work either. Always be sure to do a quick walk around the equipment to make certain there is nothing obstructing its path. Lastly, look down the path to ensure there is nothing above it that the load or the machine can snag on.

Not Following Maintenance Schedules

Most people associate the recommended maintenance schedule for their
fork lift with extending the lifespan of the equipment. While this holds true with both new and used fork lifts, it also becomes a safety issue. Failing to maintain and check the breaks for example, can lead to failure. The same goes for any loose or damaged parts that don't seem quite right. Keeping up on your maintenance will pay off in many ways.

Lifting Loads Too High

Every machine is rated for a specific weight. Never lift anything over that specified amount. If you do, you can bend the
forks or tip the machine, dumping the load and putting others in danger. Always check to see what the machine is rated for and be certain you know the weight of the load before attempting to move anything.

Letting The
Fork Lifts Become Dirty Or Cluttered

In many situations, it can be difficult to keep equipment clean and tidy. Working outdoors or in intense situations can make this even more difficult. However, loose dirt, rags, and other items on the machine can cause the operator to fall off. Always make sure to clean it on a regular basis and in between when you need to.

Failing To Take The Proper Precautions When Dealing With A Power Source

Working with electric, gas, or propane powered machines requires several
safety precautions to prevent accidents from occurring. Every manufacturer should include a list of the safety precautions. Make certain everyone who uses the machine is aware of them and follows them closely. For a battery-powered machine for instance, make sure eye, face, and bodily protection is worn each time the operator connects the charger to the battery. You also want to make certain all of the cables are in good condition before making the connection.

New and used fork lifts can make many jobs far easier, but they can also make the workplace more dangerous if they aren't used properly. By remembering these common mistakes made with a fork lifts, Chicago warehouses and other businesses across the country can avoid them and ensure the workday is a good one for everyone.
