Serious injuries can result in lifelong disability and temporary or sometimes permanent loss of income. Where the injuries are fatal, family and friends also have to deal with the severe emotional trauma of suddenly losing a loved one. When a chainsaw cuts into limbs, it is not a nice clean cut easy to sew up by the surgeons.

A few years ago, close to where I live, a farmer was working in a bucket of a telehandler machine, which was extended upwards so that he could use the chainsaw to cut branches off trees. His son was driving the machine. The farmer shouted to his son to move backwards to work on other branches, but unfortunately the telehandler wheels went into a pothole, which caused instability to the machine, and the farmer and the chainsaw fell out of the bucket.

Why do we take risks, and yes we do this probably every day of our lives, but when working in and around machinery and chainsaws, carrying out a risk assessment plan will save lives. In the instance above, the telehandler should have had as its attachment a people cage, and not a "digging bucket". The area around the telehandler should have worked out the best place to place the machine to ensure stability.

A self-employed forestry worker was struck in the face by a chainsaw. He was snedding windblown trees and stumbled as he moved position. An employee arborist suffered a chainsaw laceration to the back of his left leg during tree pruning work. His employer had provided him with chainsaw protective trousers, which only had protective material on the front of the legs.

A local authority arborist fell from a ladder when removing the lower limbs of a tree during dismantling. The ladder was supported on the branch he was cutting. The ladder was not secured to the branch, nor was the chainsaw operator roped into the tree. It was because he was embarrassed, as he himself, working as a chainsaw operator, had been out working alone with a chainsaw, and slipped.

It is time for everyone who works or has an interest in forestry and arboriculture to ensure that adequate resources (i.e. time, money and effort) are devoted to health and safety. Make this a lifelong priority - not a lifelong regret.

A Staffordshire construction company has been fined £30,000 after a worker was injured when he fell into an unsafe excavation.

The worker, of North Wales, suffered internal injuries and a broken pelvis when he fell into an excavation on a site in Wrexham, where the company was installing a septic tank system.

The HSE urged companies to better manage their health and safety risks - a spokesperson commented "Construction has a significant number of risks to health and safety, which need to be managed properly. There was a systematic failure by Winnington Construction to manage the risk on this site, which resulted in the worker falling into the excavation and receiving quite serious injuries"

• Failure to provide safe plant/equipment: The PUWER (Provision and Use Work Equipment Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998) are designed to ensure that all equipment complies with Health & Safety Legislation and that it is services and regularly maintained.

Through studying and working with a number of professionals, I have come to realize that the best drivers are not necessarily the ones who have been doing it the longest. The best drivers are those who have learned to ‘operate’ their vehicle instead of simply ‘driving’ it.

The difference is that a driver sits in the car and tries to make it do what they want. Instead of just sitting in the vehicle, a good operator has learned to ‘put it on’. You move your hand, and the car moves. The key to remember is that you must become aware of every movement, smell and sound that the car makes.

Operating something is like a relationship – you do something, it responds. There is a continual interaction when you are together, partly conscious and partly subconscious. The best operators include all of their senses when driving a vehicle.

Your eyes give immediate and consistent feedback. Feedback through the steering wheel is only part of it. Be aware of feelings from other places (seat of the pants).

Listening to the vehicle and even being aware of smells can play an important part of it too.These are just a few simple things that anyone can become more aware of and learn to become a better, safer driver.

Narrow aisle forklifts can be found with scissors reach attachments, and also with straddle arms.

A scissors reach attachment allows the forklift to reach into deep racking to pick and stock several feet in front of the actual lift truck chassis. A heavy-duty scissors reach mechanism can extend and retract at the push of a button and allow the reach truck’s operator to reach the forklift’s forks into the storage rack. Some scissors reaches can extend to as far as two-pallet loads deep making product that is set double deep easy to reach. Scissors reach trucks must either have a counterbalance or straddle arms to offset the weight of the load upon the forks, although a scissors reach mechanism can extend beyond the straddle arms’ length.

Straddle trucks are fitted with arms that extend outwards underneath the forks in order to support a load. These straddle arms have wheels that function as the load wheels while the rear wheel will swivel in place to facilitate turning the straddle truck. This type of

forklift requires room for the straddle arms at the base of the racking you are using. This clearance must be provided for the straddle truck to be able to lift a load. The arm clearance can be provided by a number of means including, a low level beam to keep bottom loads off floor, single wing pallets, or other spacer options that would keep the floor clear for the straddle arms. Straddle trucks are typically less expensive than a regular counterbalance or narrow aisle lift truck.

Managing fully loaded pallets is simply not possible without some kind of mechanized assistance. As long as the total weight doesn't exceed 1500 kilograms, an electric pallet stacker is able to deliver and stack up loaded pallets.

The main difference between a manually driven and an electric pallet stacker is the way they transport pallets from one place to another. Otherwise you should consider an electric-motor driven pallet stacker.

Has the Time Come For a Reconditioned Forklift Fleet?

The single Manufacturer Fallacy

Most operations that run a large fleet of forklifts select a primary new truck manufacturer (for example, Toyota or Hyster for pneumatic/cushion trucks, Crown or Raymond for electrics). The big issue is maintenance.

Full service leases are supposed to cover maintenance costs up front. You can never be absolutely certain what maintenance costs will be.

Not all forklift manufacturers are good at everything that a forklift does in your operation. Electrics are quiet, inexpensive and nonpolluting, but of limited range. In extreme cases, turret trucks may be required.

To get the most efficient vehicle for every job, you would have to determine the features and characteristics required for that job, and then buy the necessary number of trucks from the manufacturer who makes the best forklift with those features and characteristics - and then repeat the process for every job in your operation.

New vs. Refurbished

With the ever-increasing costs of capital equipment, refurbishing used lift trucks has finally become big business. Purchasing used forklifts can be risky, but buying quality refurbished ones doesn't have to be.

For years, third parties have been refurbishing trucks for small users who could not afford new units. They had to do it by themselves to insure quality, and the number of quality-refurbished trucks on the market was extremely limited. The market for renewed trucks has grown to the point where there are now factory-reconditioned forklifts available at perhaps one third the cost of new trucks.

Renewed vehicles have had some run time, a kind of shakedown cruise after which the weak components are replaced. You purchase a refurbished unit at one-third the cost of a new one.

There is one last accepted truth I would like to address related to the issue of maintaining a fleet of forklift trucks - brand name versus off-brand parts. It seems obvious that an operation running a particular brand of forklifts will be safest stocking spare parts from that manufacturer, even if they do cost a little more.

Factories in China that have produced parts for other name brand trucks for years are now starting to sell direct in the United States at significantly reduced prices over name brands.

A pallet jack, also known as a pallet truck or pump truck, is a tool used to lift and move pallets. A manual pallet jack is a hand-powered jack.

The front wheels are mounted inside the end of the forks, and as the hydraulic jack is raised, the forks are separated vertically from the front wheels, forcing the load upward until it clears the floor. The pallet is only lifted enough to clear the floor for subsequent travel.

Operation is by the centrally located Control Lever and Handle. Steering is accomplished by rotating the Handle. The Control Lever has three function positions. In the down position, the hydraulic pump is engaged and pumping the Handle will raise the frame. The middle position is selected by using the Locking Lever, providing a neutral position, which disengages the Handle from the hydraulic pump. The upper position releases hydraulic pressure, lowering the frame. Raising Control Lever from neutral position to upper position automatically disengages Locking Lever. Lowering of the frame may also be accomplished by the handy, foot-operated Lowering Pedal.

Warning:

This pallet jack is designed to use with palletized and stable load on level floor.
Do not use the pallet jack for any other purpose than its intended use.
Do not use with unstable, unbalanced or loosely stacked load.
Do not use the pallet jack on slope. The pallet jack may be uncontrollable and create danger.
Do not put foot or hand under lowering forks. Injury can result.
Do not put foot or hand in any moving part of the truck when it is being lowered, elevated or moved.
Do not allow foot or hand to be in front of rolling wheels at any time.
Do not allow other person to stand in front of or behind the pallet jack when it starts to move.
Do not ride on forks or do not allow anyone to ride on forks.
Do not move the pallet jack with load too fast. It may be uncontrollable and create danger.
Keep watching the condition of the load at any time. If the load inclines or tends to fall, stop operating the pallet jack and reform the load.
Do not overload the pallet jack. Stay within the rated capacity. Overload will cause damage on many parts of it and sometimes create unexpected danger.
Do not subject to unbalanced load, either side to side or along length of frame.
Do not load tips of frame only.
Do not allow pallet jack to drop from one level to another. A drop even 1 cm will cause an “impact load” which is more than double the actual load on the pallet jack and can cause considerable damage.
Do not allow piston rod or pump piston to be scratched or nicked. This will create oil leakage and decrease seal life.
